The Reader

If you missed Kate Winslet’s Oscar-Winning turn in “The Reader,” you have another chance with the DVD release of the 2008 film. Based on the bestselling novel by Bernhard Schlink, “The Reader” offers a unique perspective on the effects the Holocaust had on one Nazi perpetrator. Winslet takes on the immense supporting role of Hanna Schmitz, a woman who has a brief, passionate affair with 15 year-old Michael Berg (David Kross) in 1950s, post-war Germany. As the woman coaches her young partner in the ways of love, he reads her great works of literature from Chekov to Homer. Soon, Hanna abruptly disappears, and Michael returns to his normal life.reader

Almost a decade later, Michael (Ralph Fiennes) is studying law, when he sees Hanna again; she is on trial for her crimes as an S.S. guard during the war. Michael is torn between a desire for justice and his knowledge of a secret that may save Hanna. “The Reader” is a haunting love story about truth, reconciliation, and how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another. Fine performances combined with a unique historical perspective make this DVD a must-watch. Although “The Reader” is often uncomfortable to watch; you will find it even more difficult to look away.
